FE Report

Dhaka stocks closed marginally higher amid choppy trading Tuesday, taking the benchmark index to second best high.

The market flipped between gains and losses throughout the session as it opened with strong note in the morning and nosedived at noon but a late rally kept the bourses in positive territory.

The benchmark DSE General Index (DGN) ended at 6332.20 with a slight gain of 0.11 per cent or 7.23 points, hitting highest 6377.18 in the morning and 6310.41 at noon.

The broader All Shares Price Index (DSI) gained 0.25 per cent or 13.37 points to 5226.95. The DSE 20 index comprising the blue chip shares was up by 1.74 per cent or 62 points to 3606.57.

Declines beat losers as out of 254 issues traded, 105 closed positive, 142 negative and seven remained unchanged.

Daily turnover stood at Tk 19.77 billion, down 14.57 per cent over the previous session.

Banking sector, which makes up one-fourth of DSE's market capitalisation, rose 1.61 per cent after finishing flat in the previous session.

Among the banks, United Commercial Bank (UCB) increased highest 12.50 per cent as share trading of the bank resumed Sunday after two years, as its lengthy legal battle ended in amicable settlement.

Pharmaceuticals was up by 2.62 per cent to come out as top gaining sector as Square pharmaceuticals, the country's top drug maker, edged 4.94 per cent higher on better-than-expected dividend declaration at the end of the month.
